What homeowners around Nashua ask us most, about pricing, prep, timing, decks and barns.
Pricing and estimates
It depends on the size of the house, the number of stories, the condition of the siding and trim, and how much scraping and priming it needs. Prep is most of the cost on an exterior, so WJN Painting does not quote by phone. We walk the house for free and give you a written price.
Yes. WJN Painting gives free walkthroughs and written estimates for interior, exterior, deck and barn projects in Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts.
The surfaces to be painted, the prep work, the number of coats, who supplies the paint and the total price. If something on the house needs repair before it can be painted, we point it out and note it separately.
It helps for interiors and for picking colors. For an exterior we can often look at the house on our own and go over the estimate with you by phone, as long as we can walk around the whole property.
Exterior painting
Usually from late spring through mid fall. Paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures that stay above the product minimum through the night, so exterior work is scheduled around the weather. WJN Painting will move a day rather than paint on wet or cold siding.
WJN Painting scrapes loose paint, sands rough edges, spot primes bare wood and caulks open seams before any finish coat. Painting over failing paint is the main reason exteriors start peeling again after one or two winters.
Peeling usually means moisture is getting behind the paint, or the paint was applied over a dirty, chalky or failing surface. Common sources in New England are worn caulk, bare wood at sills and trim, and moisture from inside the house. We look for the cause during the walkthrough.
Yes. Trim often fails years before the siding because sills, fascia and corner boards take the most water and sun. Painting the trim on its own can extend the life of the whole exterior.
No. For exterior work we only need access to the outside of the house, water and an outlet. We keep you updated on the schedule.
Interior painting
We move and cover furniture in the rooms we paint and put it back when we finish. Fragile items, electronics and things on the walls are best taken down by you before we start.
Yes. We work room by room, keep walkways clear and clean up at the end of each day.
Yes. Stairwells, balusters and handrails are a regular part of our interior work, including railings in a separate color from the walls.
Decks, barns and other projects
Yes. WJN Painting cleans, preps and stains or seals decks, stairs and railings in Southern New Hampshire and Northern Massachusetts.
Most decks do best with a penetrating or semi transparent stain because it soaks in and does not peel. Solid stain hides more wear on older boards. Railings and skirting can be painted to match the house. We recommend an option after seeing the deck.
Yes. Barns, carriage houses, detached garages and sheds are a regular part of WJN Painting work, including tall gables and weathered wood that needs heavy prep.
We mainly paint homes and outbuildings, and we take on smaller commercial buildings as well. Call and describe the building and we will tell you if it is a fit.
